Horses and Butterflies, 2017, stoneware
They say the reason horses and butterflies are so happy is because they don't spend their time comparing themselves to other horses and butterflies. Try to imagine this life for a moment. To live present, act on instinct, and simply BE. This outlook is ill-fitted against the anxiety, fear and isolation of mental illness. For society in general, we are driven not by who we are, but by what we don't have - the freedom from which seems out of reach. And yet the path towards mental health requires us to recalibrate the scales. To stop looking over our shoulder and around the room. To encourage one another to live by design, not desire. Do you live by design? Are you in flight, or in fetters?
